ASEAN Cup vital for Malaysia's squad development, says coach Cklamovski
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 15 — Malaysia's national football coach Peter Cklamovski says the 2026 Hyundai ASEAN Cup is crucial for team development and strengthening ahead of major tournaments.
He stated the tournament's timing outside the FIFA international window provides a significant advantage for focusing on squad depth.
"The ASEAN Cup presents an important development opportunity for us," Cklamovski said in a statement on the Harimau Malaya website.
He added it allows the team to give emerging players international experience and strengthen the national pathway ahead of future tournaments.
This includes preparation for major events like the 2027 SEA Games, which Malaysia will host.
The official draw for the tournament's 16th edition was held in Jakarta.
Malaysia, the 2010 champions, were drawn into Group B alongside seven-time winners Thailand.
The group also includes the Philippines, Myanmar, and Laos.
The draw offers Malaysia a chance to avenge a 0-1 defeat to Thailand in the 2024 edition.
Defending champions Vietnam head Group A with Singapore, Indonesia, Cambodia, and a playoff winner.
The ASEAN Cup group stage is scheduled to run from July 24 to August 26.
