Campaigns to intensify as Kinabatangan, Lamag by-elections hit midway point

KINABATANGAN, Jan 17 — Candidates in the Kinabatangan parliamentary and Lamag state by-elections are expected to accelerate their campaigns as the races reach the midway mark on Saturday, following a slow-paced first week.

The by-elections were triggered by the deaths of the previous incumbents, with polling scheduled for Jan 31.

Campaign activities have been subdued in the initial days, attributed to logistical challenges and voter apathy in the remote constituencies.

Political analysts predict a surge in rallies, door-to-door visits, and social media outreach in the coming days.

"We are ramping up efforts to connect with voters directly," a campaign manager for one of the candidates said.

Key issues include local development, infrastructure, and economic opportunities in the rural areas.

The Kinabatangan seat is historically contested between major national parties, while Lamag has seen independent candidates gain traction.

Voter turnout in previous by-elections in these regions has averaged around 60%.

Election officials have deployed additional resources to ensure smooth polling amid the anticipated increased activity.

Results are expected to be announced late on Jan 31, with implications for the balance of power in the state assembly and national parliament.
