Deadly AC Blast at HELP University: Two-Week Probe Underway
A comprehensive investigation into the fatal air-conditioning system explosion at HELP University is expected to take approximately two weeks to complete, according to a senior Fire and Rescue Department official. The tragic incident, which occurred in Kuala Lumpur, resulted in the death of one student and injuries to nine others. The victim has been identified as 24-year-old Soo Yu Juan, a student at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, who succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital. The Higher Education Ministry has confirmed that four students were among those affected by the blast. Datuk Ahmad Izram Osman, Deputy Director-General (Operations) of the Malaysia Fire and Rescue Department, emphasized the complexity of the probe, noting that it involves multiple stakeholders and requires meticulous analysis. "As a technical agency, we cannot make early assumptions. We must go through various processes before identifying the actual cause," he stated, as reported by the New Straits Times. Fire investigation officers are conducting a thorough examination of the incident, including recording statements from the building owner and the air-conditioning unit manufacturer. Samples have been collected from the site for detailed analysis. While some tests can be conducted internally within a week, more advanced analyses may necessitate sending samples to accredited external laboratories, potentially extending the investigation timeline. Ahmad Izram underscored the importance of accuracy, affirming, "We must be absolutely certain before making any statement. We will only move towards confirmation once the investigation is fully completed." In a separate development, Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Ramanan Ramakrishnan indicated that he is awaiting a comprehensive report from the Higher Education Ministry to determine appropriate assistance for the victims. The ministry continues to monitor the situation closely as authorities work to ascertain the cause of this devastating incident.
