Deputy Minister's Life Changed by RM200,000 Gift from News Anchor
In a heartfelt social media tribute, Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong has shared the remarkable story of how an act of profound generosity from a celebrated news anchor and his wife transformed his life's trajectory, enabling his university education when financial hardship seemed insurmountable. Liew recounted that in 1989, as a 12-year-old selling lottery tickets in Petaling Jaya, he met the late RTM Mandarin news anchor Fei Chong Ming and his wife, renowned radio broadcaster Cheah Keng Sin. The media personalities, impressed by the young boy's interest in politics, kindly engaged with him. Years later, Liew's aspiration to study political science at the Australian National University was jeopardized by the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis. In 2000, his family planned to refinance their home to fund his first year, requiring a RM10,000 loan for legal fees. They approached the Fei couple for assistance. After a lengthy discussion, Fei delivered a life-altering decision: he declined the loan but instead offered to fully support Liew's entire four-year degree from 2001 to 2005. The couple, unrelated to Liew, covered all tuition and living expenses, totaling RM200,000. Liew emphasized that this support came at a critical juncture, providing the foundation for his future. Fei passed away in 2012, and Liew pledged to honor the debt through dedicated public service rather than financial repayment. His recent tribute follows the passing of Cheah on January 9, expressing "boundless gratitude" for their "rare and selfless generosity" that forever changed his life and inspired his commitment to improving the lives of Malaysians.
