Johor-Singapore RTS Link Nears Completion, Testing Underway
The Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link connecting Johor Bahru, Malaysia, and Singapore is advancing steadily, with completion targeted by the end of this year, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke. Speaking at the Malaysian Real Estate and Housing Developers’ Association (REHDA) Institute’s The CEO Series 2026 conference, Loke confirmed that most physical infrastructure, including station buildings and structural works, is now finished. The project has transitioned to the critical phase of system installation and testing. Trains are already undergoing trials on tracks in Johor Bahru, with extensive testing planned over the coming months to ensure operational readiness. Loke emphasized that these steps are essential for the RTS Link to commence operations as scheduled in January 2027. A key legislative milestone is also on the horizon. Loke highlighted the importance of a new bill to be tabled in the next parliamentary session, which will enable joint border controls. This legislation is crucial for establishing co-located customs, immigration, and quarantine (CIQ) stations, facilitating seamless cross-border travel and enhancing bilateral cooperation between Malaysia and Singapore. Additionally, Loke discussed the Bukit Chagar Integrated Development, advocating for a model similar to Hong Kong’s Central district. He stressed the need for integration between JB Sentral and Bukit Chagar, located approximately 300 meters apart, through pedestrian walkways to improve connectivity for commuters accessing buses and trains. The progress on the RTS Link underscores a significant step forward in regional infrastructure, promising to boost economic ties and streamline travel between the two nations.
