Johor Umno calls for separate state election from GE16 to stand on own strength

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 15 — Johor Umno has called for the state election to be held separately from the 16th General Election (GE16), emphasizing the need for the party to rely on its own strength without external political forces.

Johor Umno delegate Datuk Abdul Halim Suleiman made the request during the 2025 Umno General Assembly debate, stating it aims to focus on strong governance and restore public confidence in Johor.

"Whatever the political moves, strategies or calculations for the good of the party, Umno Johor places its trust entirely in the wisdom of the party leadership," Abdul Halim said.

He stressed that Johor Umno's priority is providing excellent service to the people with sincerity and commitment.

"What matters most to us in Johor is ensuring that Umno stands on its own strength," Abdul Halim added.

According to Abdul Halim, whether Umno continues or ends cooperation with Pakatan Harapan, the fundamental principle must be self-reliance.

He said Johor would not borrow strength from others, seeking support for a separate state election.

The Johor State Assembly must be dissolved and a new election held by March 2027, unless dissolved earlier.

In his speech, Abdul Halim also warned against DAP and Amanah, accusing them of exploiting political uncertainty for gain.

He stated that any party obstructing Johor's development agenda would be left behind as the state progresses.
