MACC Seizes Millions in Cash, Gold, Luxury Goods in Army Probe
In a significant crackdown on alleged corruption within Malaysia's defense procurement sector, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has seized millions in cash, gold, and luxury goods, while freezing tens of millions in company accounts. The investigation, announced by MACC chief Tan Sri Azam Baki at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur on January 15, 2026, focuses on two primary cases involving bribery, abuse of power, and money laundering. To date, 23 individuals, including armed forces personnel and civilians, have been arrested. In the first and larger case, seizures amount to an estimated RM11.4 million, comprising RM5.8 million in cash (both local and foreign currency), a Range Rover, 26 luxury watches—predominantly Rolexes valued at RM2.3 million—along with gold, diamonds, and jewelry. Additionally, 75 company bank accounts containing between RM32.5 million and RM35 million have been frozen. Azam confirmed that the Army Chief, previously remanded in connection with the case, was released on Monday. He emphasized the complexity of tracing fund flows, stating, "We are not only looking at money transactions. We must also prove who gave the money, who received it and for what purpose." The investigation paper is expected to be submitted to the Attorney General's Chambers by next week. In a second, related case, a high-ranking officer was called in to assist with the final stages, while another senior officer was arrested yesterday. This case involves four armed forces personnel and nine civilians, with seizures including RM1.3 million in cash and RM721,000 in foreign currency. The MACC's actions underscore a rigorous effort to combat corruption and ensure accountability in defense procurement processes.
