Malaysians Unharmed in Thailand Train Crash That Killed 31
A tragic train accident in northeastern Thailand on Wednesday resulted in at least 31 fatalities and 64 injuries, but no Malaysians were among the victims, according to Malaysia's Ambassador to Thailand, Datuk Wan Zaidi Wan Abdullah. The incident occurred at 9:45 a.m. local time in the Sikhio district of Nakhon Ratchasima province, approximately 230 kilometers northeast of Bangkok, when a construction crane collapsed onto a moving passenger train. The ambassador confirmed that all injured individuals have been identified as Thai citizens, and the identities of the deceased are still being verified. As of 5:20 p.m. local time, no foreigners, including Malaysians, were recorded as affected. The train, carrying around 195 passengers and staff, was traveling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province at the time of the crash. In response to the disaster, Thai Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn has ordered a thorough investigation. The construction site involved is part of the Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima segment of a transnational high-speed rail project connecting Bangkok to Kunming in southwestern China. Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited, the contractor responsible for the segment, has pledged to provide compensation and medical treatment to those impacted by the incident. This accident underscores the importance of safety measures in large-scale infrastructure projects and highlights the swift diplomatic communication between Malaysia and Thailand in times of crisis. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as rescue and recovery efforts proceed.
