Pahang Lecturer Loses RM500k in Fake Investment Scam
A 39-year-old lecturer from Pahang has suffered a devastating financial loss of RM493,600 after falling victim to a sophisticated online investment scam. According to Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman, the incident began in September 2025 when the victim received a phone call from an individual posing as a stock investment agent. The scammer then added her to a WhatsApp group and directed her to download a fraudulent investment application via a provided link. Over the course of several transactions, the victim transferred funds from her life savings and loans obtained from family members, making 22 separate payments totaling RM493,600 to five different bank accounts. The scheme unraveled in January 2026 when the perpetrators demanded an additional RM144,676, falsely claiming it was a withdrawal tax. Growing suspicious, the victim refused to comply and subsequently realized she had been deceived, prompting her to file a police report on January 14. Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman has issued a stern warning to the public, urging individuals to seek advice from their nearest police station before engaging in any investment opportunities. He also emphasized the importance of verifying bank account numbers through the official portal https://semakmule.rmp.gov.my/ prior to conducting transactions. This case highlights the escalating threat of online financial fraud and serves as a critical reminder for vigilance in the digital age.
