Police arrest journalist over remarks at KL forum, investigating under sedition
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 17 — Police confirmed the arrest of a journalist over remarks made during a public forum, investigating under sedition and other laws.
Federal Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar said in a statement the journalist is being probed under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act, Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
"A local 30-year-old man was detained by a police squad in USJT on 17 January 2026 around 12 midnight to aid investigations," the statement read.
Police emphasized firm action will be taken against individuals believed to incite sedition or hostility.
"A thorough investigation will be conducted in accordance with existing legal provisions," police said.
The public is advised to be prudent and responsible when making statements or sharing content in public or on social media.
The arrest occurred in Kuala Lumpur, with the journalist detained in USJT at midnight on January 17, 2026.
Authorities are investigating potential violations related to sedition, public mischief, and improper use of network facilities.
