Selangor government open to alternative sites for pig farm relocation amid resid
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 17 — The Selangor state government is willing to consider alternative locations for relocating pig farms from Tanjung Sepat, with the current proposed site in Bukit Tagar still under discussion, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said.
Residents from four Felda settlements near Bukit Tagar have opposed the relocation, appealing to the Sultan of Selangor to intervene over concerns about proximity to homes and water sources.
"The Selangor government is open to studying other locations and if there were more suitable ones, they were prepared to reconsider," Amirudin said.
He explained the relocation aims to replace unmanaged farms with a controlled farming center using a 'zero discharge' concept to prevent waste discharge into rivers.
A large buffer zone would also be established to reduce odor and noise impacts on surrounding areas.
"What is certain is that the government cannot allow the current pig farming site in Tanjung Sepat to continue operations as it is now," Amirudin said.
The project is currently at the Environmental Impact Assessment and Social Impact Assessment evaluation stage.
Amirudin acknowledged residents' concerns while emphasizing the need for improved farm management.
The relocation is part of efforts to address environmental and social issues associated with the existing farms.
Further discussions will depend on assessment outcomes and community feedback.
