Trump Backs Canada-China Trade Deal on Electric Vehicles and Canola
WASHINGTON, Jan 15 — US President Donald Trump expressed support for Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's preliminary trade deal with China, which will cut tariffs on electric vehicles and canola.
Trump made the comments to reporters at the White House on Friday.
"That's what he should be doing. It's a good thing for him to sign a trade deal. If you can get a deal with China, you should do that," Trump said.
The agreement will slash tariffs on electric vehicles and canola.
Trump's endorsement comes as Carney seeks to reset trade relations with China.
The deal marks a shift in Canada's trade policy under Carney's leadership.
It follows Carney's first visit to China in eight years earlier this month.
Trade experts note the agreement could impact North American electric vehicle markets.
Further details on the deal's implementation are expected in coming weeks.
