Trump offers to restart US mediation in Egypt-Ethiopia Nile water dispute

WASHINGTON, Jan 16 — The United States is ready to restart mediation between Egypt and Ethiopia to help resolve the issue of Nile River water sharing, President Donald Trump said in a letter to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Friday.

The offer was made in a letter dated Friday, according to a Reuters report.

Trump expressed willingness to facilitate talks between the two nations.

The mediation aims to address long-standing tensions over water resources from the Nile.

Egypt and Ethiopia have been in dispute over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

The dam, located on the Blue Nile, is a key project for Ethiopia's energy needs.

Egypt relies heavily on the Nile for water and views the dam as a threat to its supply.

Previous U.S.-led mediation efforts stalled in 2020 without a resolution.

The Nile is a vital water source for over 250 million people in the region.

No immediate response from Ethiopia or Egypt was reported following the letter.

Further details on the mediation process are expected to be announced soon.
