Umno Acts as Government's Check and Balance, Says Deputy President
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 15 — Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has firmly refuted assertions that the party is passive or subservient within the federal government, asserting its pivotal role in influencing Cabinet decisions and protecting Malay interests. Speaking at the party's assembly, Mohamad, popularly known as Tok Mat, highlighted three significant instances where Umno's intervention shaped policy outcomes. He cited the postponement of the proposed Urban Renewal Act, which Umno opposed over fears it could undermine Malay land ownership in urban regions. Additionally, the party resisted the reintroduction of local council elections, arguing that such a move would heighten racial divisions. Mohamad emphasized that while other coalition partners advocated for these measures in the name of democracy, Umno's foresight and objections prevented their implementation. Mohamad underscored that these actions demonstrate Umno's commitment to its core principles, which he described as non-negotiable 'red lines.' He affirmed that despite holding fewer parliamentary seats, Umno's voice in the Cabinet is decisive, serving as an internal check and balance to prevent policies perceived as extreme or detrimental to Malay interests. Further reinforcing his stance, Mohamad dismissed claims that the Malay agenda has been sidelined, noting that key Bumiputera economic institutions such as Mara, Tekun, and PUNB continue to receive protection and enhanced funding. He concluded by declaring that as long as Umno remains part of the government, it will steadfastly uphold and advance these interests, embodying what he termed 'the real Umno.'
