Umno delegate calls for reinstatement of caning as school disciplinary measure

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 17 — A Penang Umno delegate has called on the government to reinstate caning as a formal disciplinary measure in schools nationwide, citing growing concerns over legal risks faced by teachers in the classroom.

The proposal was made during a party meeting, where the delegate argued that current disciplinary methods are insufficient.

"Teachers are increasingly hesitant to discipline students due to fear of legal repercussions," the delegate said.

Caning was previously used in Malaysian schools but has been phased out in recent years.

The delegate emphasized that reinstating caning would provide a clear, structured approach to discipline.

This call comes amid broader discussions on education reform and student behavior management.

No official response has been issued by the government or education ministry yet.

If implemented, the measure would affect all public schools across the country.

Further debates are expected in upcoming parliamentary sessions.
