Umno has not decided on electoral cooperation with Pakatan Harapan, says secreta
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 15 — Umno has not decided whether to cooperate with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in upcoming elections, though it will continue cooperation within the Madani government, Secretary-General Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said on Wednesday.
"We have not made any decision on that matter," Asyraf said at a press conference after visiting media outlets in conjunction with the 2025 Umno General Assembly.
"If you understand what the president has said, the most important thing is to strengthen the existing government to ensure stability is achieved and the prosperity of our people is safeguarded."
Asyraf said this approach aims to ensure political stability and benefit the people, noting positive economic indicators, investments, and investor confidence.
"If we look at economic indicators, investments and investor confidence, all show positive signs. What is the foundation of all this? The foundation is political stability," he said.
He warned that political instability would affect the economy, drive away investors, and ultimately harm the people.
Asyraf explained that Umno, as a party with long governance experience, must consider its responsibility to the people when making political decisions.
Meanwhile, he said Umno's decision to postpone party elections prioritizes internal strengthening and focuses on upcoming state and general elections.
Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced on Tuesday that Umno elections would be held after the 16th General Election (GE16).
The party's current focus includes potential state elections in Melaka and Johor this year, followed by GE16.
