Umno postpones party elections to focus on upcoming state and general elections
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 17 — Umno is postponing its party elections to maintain unity ahead of upcoming state elections and the 16th general election (GE16), according to Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
The decision aims to ensure the party remains cohesive during critical electoral periods.
"We need to stay united as we prepare for the state elections and GE16," Asyraf Wajdi said.
He emphasized that focusing on external political challenges takes priority over internal party contests.
The postponement affects all scheduled party polls, including leadership positions.
Umno, a key component of Malaysia's ruling coalition, faces significant electoral tests in the coming years.
State elections are expected in several Malaysian states over the next two years.
GE16 is anticipated to be held by 2027, following the constitutional timeline.
This move follows similar postponements by other Malaysian political parties during election cycles.
Asyraf Wajdi did not specify a new date for the party elections, stating details will be announced later.
Party members have been advised to concentrate on grassroots mobilization and campaign preparations.
