Umno Youth Chief Akmal Resigns Melaka Exco Role, Vows to Fight DAP
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 15 — In a significant political development, Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has announced his resignation from the Melaka State Executive Council, effective next week. Dr Akmal, who served as the Exco member for Rural Development, Agriculture and Food Security, made the announcement during his policy speech at the Umno Youth annual assembly, emphasizing that his decision stems from a commitment to grassroots concerns over the party's collaboration with the Democratic Action Party (DAP). Despite stepping down from the state government role, Dr Akmal affirmed his continued leadership as Umno Youth chief, stating, "To show that I am carrying the voice of the grassroots who are concerned, I am hereby resigning... But if anyone says that I am abandoning the struggle, that is absolutely not the case — I am not leaving Umno Youth." He underscored that his priorities lie with dignity, principles, and representing the party's base, rather than holding a government position. In a defiant tone, Dr Akmal issued a warning to critics, declaring, "Now that I am no longer in the exco, I will fight you to the very end," a statement that drew enthusiastic applause from assembly delegates. He further clarified his stance, asserting, "I am bold enough to announce my resignation as a state exco to fight DAP to the very end," highlighting his resolve to uphold Umno Youth's integrity against perceived opposition threats. The announcement, delivered with visible emotion, concluded with Dr Akmal embracing delegates, including Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Abd Rauf. The Umno Youth assembly, part of the broader party general assembly running from Wednesday to Saturday, brings together representatives from 191 divisions across the nation, marking a pivotal moment in ongoing political discourse within Malaysia's largest Malay-based party.
