Umno Youth Debates Akmal's Resignation Amid 'No Fear' Slogan Scrutiny
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 15 — Amid a vibrant sea of red at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), Umno delegates gathered for the party's general assembly, but discussions quickly shifted from formal proceedings to the potential resignation of Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh. As delegates entered Dewan Merdeka for the four-day event, which included a symposium on digital-era politics and a briefing by Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, grassroots leaders questioned the timing and implications of Dr Akmal's hinted departure, particularly given his 'No fear, no surrender' slogan. Speaking to Malay Mail on the sidelines, several Umno Youth leaders expressed respect for Dr Akmal's personal decision but voiced concerns over its political impact. They argued that his resignation could be ill-timed for a party still working to regain Malay support. Umno Youth committee member for Kota Tinggi, Razif Abd Rahman, emphasized that Dr Akmal's choice was individual and did not represent a collective stance within the Youth wing. He noted mixed reactions at the grassroots level, especially regarding Dr Akmal's recent proposal to revive Muafakat Nasional. Razif acknowledged Dr Akmal's success in amplifying Umno Youth's national voice but questioned the consistency of his actions. He pointed to the 'No fear, no surrender' slogan, coined during a public dispute with Seputeh MP Teresa Kok in September 2024 over halal certification remarks, which led to a RM25 million legal demand. Razif highlighted a perceived misalignment between Dr Akmal's previous assertive stance and his current consideration to step down, asking, 'Why the sudden change? Supposedly, you have to make a very firm decision.' Dr Akmal's recent call for Umno to withdraw from the unity government, firmly rejected by Ahmad Zahid, preceded his hints at resigning from his roles, including as Umno Youth chief and Melaka state executive councillor, following negative feedback from party leadership. He has since met with Ahmad Zahid and Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh to discuss his position and remarks. The debate underscores internal tensions as Umno navigates its political strategy and leadership dynamics.
