UPSR & PT3 Exams Review: Education Ministry Sets 2026 Deadline
PUTRAJAYA, Jan 15 — The Ministry of Education has announced a comprehensive review to assess the potential reinstatement of the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) and Pentaksiran Tingkatan Tiga (PT3) examinations, with a target completion date set for the end of 2026. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek confirmed that the evaluation process will commence imminently, following the finalisation of appointments to the National Education Advisory Council (MPPK). Minister Fadhlina emphasised that the review is a response to substantial feedback from parents and educators, who have expressed concerns regarding the current School-Based Assessment (PBS) system, which replaced UPSR in 2021 and PT3 in 2022. "We are prepared to initiate this review as soon as the MPPK members are appointed," she stated during a press conference after the Preschool PAKAT programme and Early Schooling Aid (BAP) presentation at Sekolah Kebangsaan Presint 9 (1). The government's decision to re-examine these assessments underscores its commitment to a consultative approach in shaping national education policy. "This demonstrates that the government values stakeholder input and is dedicated to making informed decisions through collective examination," Minister Fadhlina added. The review aims to balance academic rigour with holistic student development, ensuring that any policy changes align with contemporary educational needs. In related developments, the distribution of the BAP assistance is progressing smoothly nationwide, with completion expected this week. Minister Fadhlina noted that flexibility is being extended to rural schools and those with large student populations to facilitate efficient management. This initiative reflects the ministry's ongoing efforts to support educational equity and accessibility across Malaysia. The outcome of this review will be pivotal in determining the future structure of primary and secondary assessments, potentially reinstating standardized examinations to complement existing evaluation frameworks. Stakeholders are encouraged to engage with the process as the ministry seeks to foster a robust and responsive education system.
