White House says European troops in Greenland won't affect Trump's acquisition g
WASHINGTON, Jan 15 — The White House stated that European troop deployments in Greenland will not influence President Donald Trump's goal of acquiring the territory for the United States.
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt made the remarks during a briefing on Tuesday.
"I don't think troops in Europe impact the president's decision-making process, nor does it impact his goal of the acquisition of Greenland at all," Leavitt said.
The statement followed a meeting between US officials and representatives from Denmark and Greenland.
Leavitt described the meeting as productive but did not provide specific details.
Trump, a Republican, has previously stated that Greenland should belong to the United States.
He has not ruled out taking the territory by force, according to Reuters.
The comments come amid Arctic tensions and recent announcements of European troop reinforcements in Greenland.
Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark with strategic importance in the Arctic region.
The White House did not specify next steps regarding the acquisition goal.
