Zahid: Akmal's Exco Resignation Personal, Not Pressure on Unity Govt
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 15 — Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has clarified that Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh's resignation as a Melaka State Executive Councillor (Exco) is a personal decision and does not signify pressure on Umno to exit the Unity Government. The deputy prime minister emphasized that the Umno Youth Chief's action was made independently, without any external duress. Ahmad Zahid revealed that Dr Muhamad Akmal had consulted with him and Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh prior to finalizing his decision. "I wish to respect his stand to relinquish his position as a Melaka State Exco member," he stated during a press briefing after attending a special meeting with overseas Umno delegates and launching the new Overseas Umno Club logo. Earlier, in his policy speech as Umno Youth Chief, Dr Muhamad Akmal announced his resignation as the Melaka Rural Development, Agriculture, and Food Security Exco, effective next week. Ahmad Zahid explained that this move will enable Dr Muhamad Akmal to dedicate his efforts entirely to party responsibilities, particularly in bolstering the Youth wing at the grassroots level. In related developments, Ahmad Zahid addressed the presence of former Youth Chief Khairy Jamaluddin at the 2025 Umno Youth General Assembly, noting that it had received his approval. "Coincidentally, Khairy met me last night... he sought my blessing, and I agreed to it," he said. However, he clarified that any potential return of Khairy to Umno hinges on a formal application from the former Health Minister, who was expelled from the party in January 2023 following criticisms of the leadership during the GE15 campaign. — Bernama
